The Shasta County Veterans Service Office is a county department to assist veterans, their dependents, and survivors with obtaining entitlements from federal, state, and local agencies administering programs for veterans. This department advocates for veterans rights and is not a division of the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Northern California Veterans Cemetery is the dignified final resting place for California´s veterans of the armed services, their spouse and eligible dependents. It has been designed to provide a place of meditation and quiet contemplation for veterans, their families and friends. It is located 10 miles southwest of Redding on 320 acres near the town of Igo The design of the cemetery remains in keeping with the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside, surrounded by mountain ranges. The Northern California Veterans Cemetery (NCVC) is the first state-owned and operated veterans cemetery in the Golden State.
The cemetery serves the veteran population in eighteen Northern California counties and provides sufficient burial space for more than twenty years. Any eligible veteran, along with spouses and eligible dependents, may be interred at the cemetery. The eligibility criteria for burial at the cemetery is the same as for a national veterans cemetery. The Cemetery conveys the appreciation of the people of California to its veterans answering the call of duty and faithfully and honorably serving the United States of America and the State of California.
The dedication ceremony took place on Veterans´ Day, November 11, 2005. The event included a flyover, 21-gun salute, and music by the USAF Band of the Golden West, with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger being the keynote speaker.
PROPOSED VETERANS HOME IN REDDING
Jon Thomas, a Fresno developer, donated 43 acres to the City of Redding for a Veterans Home. The land sits on a bluff along Knighton Road above Churn Creek. A State Senate Bill that would provide an additional $30 million in bonds to ensure the construction of the veterans home has cleared its first hurdle. If everything goes smoothly, groundbreaking could occur late 2008 and construction would begin for the 150-bed home which could open in 2010.
