The Senior Scene

The north state has a lot to offer seniors, such as social activities, healthy living options and residential communities.  There are many organizations that foster friendship, recreation, fun, and nutrition centers in nearly every community.  


Some groups, agencies and services specifically designed for Seniors

  • Golden Umbrella, 200 Mercy Oaks Drive, Redding.    The agency offers information, assistance and advocacy for seniors through a variety of programs.  It offers a wide range of services for seniors and disabled adults.  Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.  Call (530) 223-6034 or go to www.goldenumbrella.org

  • Shasta Senior Nutrition Programs, 100 Mercy Oaks Drive, Redding.  A subsidiary of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) supported in part by Mercy Foundation North and working in close affiliation with Mercy Medical Center, Redding.  Shasta Senior Nutrition Center provides nutritious meals, transportation and supportive services.

           Meals served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 pm weekdays at four sites:

  • Senior Advocacy Center of Northern California, 1647 Hartnell Ave., Suite 6, Redding.  A nonprofit agency to help seniors live self-sufficient, abuse-free lives.
    The center offers free legal assistance to those age 60 and older, health insurance counseling and help clarifying Medicare benefits.  The Senior Advocacy Center provides assistance for Northern California seniors in three ways:

    • Senior Legal Services  
    •  HICAP- The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program. 
           HICAP provides free assistance with Medicare and other health insurance.
    •  Ombudsman - The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program provides
           independent, neutral examiners who receive and investigate problems
           and concerns of nursing home residents.

  • Shasta County Older Adult Policy Council:  With members from both private and public organizations, the group tackles a variety of projects.  Meets monthly.

  • Shasta Senior Network:  "Single point of entry" resource provides information and referral.  The Shasta Senior Network was created with a grant from the California Endowment. The goal of this web site is to increase access to resources that are available to Shasta County seniors, senior service providers and senior caregivers.  Call (530) 244-7594 or go to www.shastaseniornetwork.org 

  • Shasta County Commission on Aging:  Eight member group that reports to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors on all matters affecting senior citizens.

Employment, Retirement and Organizations

  • Experience Works:  Employment and training program for those age 55 and older who meet certain guidelines.  Call (530) 225-2257 or visit the office, 1325 Pine Street, Redding, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

  • Retired and Senior Volunteer Program:  Referral service matches the skills and interests of retirees with nonprofit agencies in Shasta and Tehama counties that need extra help.  Sponsored by the Shasta County Community Action Agency.

  • National Association of Retired Employees, Chapter 1324:  Monthly luncheon and meeting at the Redding Moose Lodge, 320 Lake Blvd., Redding.  All federal employees are welcome.  Call (530) 223-4811.

  • Retired Public Employees Association:  Monthly luncheon and meeting at 11:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month from September to May at Shasta Senior Nutrition Center in Redding.  Call (530) 241-5469. 

  • SIRS -  Branch 129, Redding.  An organization promoting the independence and dignity of retirement.  Sons in Retirement is a nonprofit public benefit corporation for retired men.  The purpose of SIR'S is to assist men in renewing friendships and making new friends through SIR's activities.  Having fun is the goal.  The only requirement for membership is that a man is retired from full time employment.  Monthly luncheon meetings, where the SIR's get together, socialize and make new acquaintances, is on the 3rd Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Elks Lodge at 250 Elk Drive, Redding.  http://www.sirsthreeshastabranch129.com/

  • Shasta College Physical Education, Fitness for Seniors (PE 300).  Free, no-credit classes offer swimming, weight training, conditioning and mall walking.  Various times and days are available in Redding, Red Bluff and Corning
