Cottonwood
is a picturesque small town with a distinctly old west appeal, a place where Shasta County´s "old west" history began.  "Step into Yesterday" by visiting historic Cottonwood.  It is just south of Redding off Highway 5, located along the Cottonwood Creek, approximately four miles west of the Sacramento River.  River front properties are available here, as well as properties with creek frontage and lake frontage.  Cottonwood lies half in southern Shasta County and half in northern Tehama County with Cottonwood Creek as the county dividing line.

Cottonwood is home to Lake California, an affordable gated community, open to all ages, where there is access to the Sacramento River and a 100-acre man made lake, clubhouse, airstrip, and tennis courts.  Many properties have spectacular views.

The Cottonwood Shasta Livestock Auction Yard is one of the largest in the western United States.  Cottonwood is a town rich in ranching heritage where horses can still be hitched to metal rings outside the stores on Front Street.  The street is wide enough for a 12-horse team or a herd of cattle.  Sidewalks were built above street level so cattle herds led through town wouldn´t wander into shops.  It was a stagecoach stop for the Pony Express and at one time, and it was more important than Anderson or Redding.  Today you can visit  the 19th century frontier town and enjoy the restaurants, and the antique and craft shops.

Cottonwood has some of the finest schools in California.  It is also a popular place for people to retire with affordable housing.  It is famous for its Cottonwood Rodeo Week held yearly in May with its parade, cowboy dance, barbecue, and the rodeo itself, and for exciting steelhead fishing on the Sacramento River, just minutes away.  Travel a few miles from town to tour the Coleman National Fish Hatchery on Battle Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento River.
